- Settled in the 1850's, Lehigh was originally known as Slabtown because of the log slabs with which the settlers used to build their shacks along the river. In 1870, this name was abandoned for Tysons Mill, Oliver Tyson was one of Lehighs prominate settlers. Still later it was called Vesper, for a town in Pennsylvania, but this was changed to its present name, also in honor of a Pennsylvania town (IA-T1).
