- Created in 1879, organized in 1880, and named for Merritt H Day, a pioneer settler and renowned Democratic Party leader in the Territorial Legislature. Mr Day served as a member of the Upper House in 1879 and 1881 as well as Commander of the State militia during the Messiah War of 1890. (SD-T17/p24) The name appeared on 1884 map and it was the size of Marshall and Day County. (SD-M3)
