Located in south central South Dakota, 85 km (53 mi) southwest of Pierre; County Seat: White River.
Created in 1909, organized in 1911, and named for Indiana native Aurthur C Mellette (1842-1896) who served as the first Governor of the State of South Dakota. (SD-T17/p30)
