  The name may be of Mohave Indian origin: 'Tohopau'. Originally named Needles in the 1880's, the name was changed to Powell for the nearby railroad station in 1883. In 1890, the settlement was known as Red Rock and Red Crossing but in 1903, a 'new city', Mellon, for John Alexander Mellon (b. 1842) who was a Colorado riverboat captain, became the official name. The placename corrupted to Mullen in 1915 but Topock became the selected post office name (AZ-T101).
