- One of the four counties formed when Arizona became a territory in 1864, the county was named for the resident Pima Indians. In 1700, it had been part of the large area 'Pimeria Alta', Spanish for 'Upper Pima Land'. It was part of Dona Ana County and Ewell County while Arizona was part of New Mexico territory (AZ-T101).
