- Presumably named for Indian chief White Cloud, whose prophetic words warned of the advancement of the white man. The Winnebago Village of White Cloud was situated here along the Rock River and was destroyed on May 10 and 11, 1832 at the beginning of the Black Hawk War. (US-T125/Illinois/p462)
