- Located in Berkshire Hills, 15 mi NW of Springfield (US-T121).
- Settled in 1654, incorporated as a town in 1656, and as a city in 1883. Probably named for the English town of Northampton from which some of the earlier settlers came. It was also the most northerly settlement on the Connecticut River at the time. Before 1656, it was Common land called Nonotuck (MA-T1/p34).
