- Originally named Chandlers Town after the first settler Job Chandler; in 1729 the name was changed to Charles Town, and in 1821 renamed Port Tobacco. It was the principal stop on the stagecoach route, the center of social and commercial life in southern Maryland, and was visited by George Washington several times.
