- County
- Located in eastern North Carolina, 122 km (76 mi) southeast of Raleigh; County Seat: Snow Hill.
- Formed in 1791 from Dobbs County and named for James Glasgow (died 1820), North Carolina Secretary of State from 1778 to 1798. In 1799, when it became apparent that Secretary Glasgow was part of several land fraud schemes, the county name was changed to Greene County to honor General Nathaniel Greene (1742-1786), Revolutionary War leader who held back British forces in the Battle of Guilford. This action paved the way for the American victory in the Battle of Yorktown. (NC-T11/p191,202)
