Located in south central North Carolina, 109 km (68 mi) west northwest of Charlotte; County Seat: Troy.
Formed in 1779 from Anson County; named for General Richard Montgomery (1736-1775), who served in the Revolutionary War and who died in the Battle of Quebec. (NC-T11/p332)
