- Located in southeastern South Dakota along the Missouri River and the Nebraska State boundary, 145 km (90 mi) southwest of Sioux Falls; County Seat: Lake Andes.
- Created in 1862, and organized officially in 1879. Reportedly named for either Charles E. Mix, Commissioner of Indian Affairs in 1858, or for Charles H. Mix, Civil War captain and government scout.
