- Created in 1862, organized in 1898, and named for John Shaw Gregory of Fort Randall, who served in the 1st Territorial Legislature in 1862 and later as a United States Indian agent for the Ponca Tribe. Mr Gregory was born in New York in 1831 and was a graduate of the U S Naval Academy. (SD-T17/p26)
