- Located in central South Dakota along the Missouri River; County Seat: Pierre.
- Created in 1873, organized in 1880; named for Alexander Hughes, a pioneer settler to this area who came from Elk Point. Mr Hughes served as President of the Council in the Territorial Legislature of 1873 when the County was formed. He later served as Receiver of the Yankton Land Office and was a member of the commission that chose Bismark as the capital of the Dakota Territory. (SD-T17/p27)
