- Located in central South Dakota, 72 km (45 mi) east-northeast of Pierre; County Seat: Highmore.
- Created in 1873, organized in 1884, and named for James Hyde of Vermillion. Mr Hyde was a member of the First Territorial Legislature of 1873 when the County was formed. He also served in the Civil War from 1862-1865, during which he was imprisoned for 3 months at Libby Prison in Richmond, and for 11 months at the Confederate Prison at Andersonville. Mr Hyde came to Vermillion in 1868 and was a prominent businessman and legislative force in Clay County affairs until his death in 1902. (SD-T17/p27)
