- Located in central South Dakota, 61 km (38 mi) southeast of Pierre; County Seat: Kennebec.
- Created in 1873, organized in 1893, and named for Major W Lyman, who was a pioneer settler in Yankton County and a member of the Territorial Legislature in 1873 when the county was created. He lived here with his Indian family until 1876, then settled in the Black Hills region. (SD-T17/p29)
