"Sumter County is a county located in the U.S. state of South Carolina. It and its county seat of Sumter are named for Revolutionary War General Thomas Sumter. The 2000 census recorded its population to be 304,646. In 2005, the U.S. Census Bureau estimated that its population had reached 305,517. It is included in the Sumter Metropolitan Statistical Area.
