What's New on Histopolis - Q1 2010

Here are some of the changes that were implemented in the first quarter of 2010:

7 February 2010

  • County Subdivisions and Incorporated Cities. Previously, places such as cemeteries and cities were primarily associated with the state and county where they are located and few places were associated with a specific county subdivision (townships, precincts, districts, wards, New England towns, ...) or incorporated city. Incorporated cities and county subdivisions now indicate the places located within their borders. For example, an incorporated city will list the cemeteries contained within its city limits.

Conversely, a cemetery or city will not only indicate the state and county where it is located, but also the county subdivision and/or incorporated city if applicable.

  • Multiple Jurisdictions. Places such as cities and cemeteries can sometimes overlap more than one county, county subdivision and/or incorporated city boundary. Where this occurs, Histopolis will list all of the containing jurisdictions where the amount of overlap is at least 1% of the total place area. If the overlap in a jurisdiction is greater than 50%, that jurisdiction will appear in the place's title.

See Kansas City and New York City for interesting cases of cities which span multiple counties and county subdivisions.

  • Several miscellaneous improvements.
