- Originally called 'Hastings' for a California clothier who operated the first mine here (AZ-T1). A townsite was laid out in 1900 by George Lobb which was named for the Arizona and Lake Superior Mining Company which operated the Silver Queen Mine. The town continued to exist under the Magma Copper Company after 1910 which mined the Silver Queen for copper and built a smelter in the town (AZ-T101).
