- Fonda was first named Marvin in honor of Marvin Hewitt, a railroad official, but the Post Office was named Cedarville because of the nearby Cedar Creek. Confusion between the two prompted the citizens to abandon both name and choose Fonda, name chosen because it was found in the U. S. Post Office directory only once (IA-T1). Platted in 1870 and incorporated in 1884.
