- Established in 1843, named for General Richard M Johnson (1780-1850), an officer in the War of 1812, US Representative from 1807 to 1819 and from 1829 to 1837, US Senator from 1819 to 1829, and Vice President under Martin Van Buren from 1837 to 1841. (KY-T1/p154)
