- Located in eastern Kentucky, along the Big Sandy River and the boundary with West Virginia, about 160 km (100 mi) east-southeast of Lexington; County Seat: Inez.
- Established in 1870, named for John D Martin (1811-1862), who served in the Kentucky Legislature from 1841 to 1843 and from 1857 to 1861. He also served as a US Congressman from 1845 to 1847. (KY-T1/p189)
