- Settled in 1638, incorporated as a town in 1639, and as a city in 1864. Name selected by the leading founder, Miss Elizabeth Poole (1589-1654), in memory of the home of her family, Taunton, Somershire, England. Before 1639 it was common land called Cohannett (MA-T1).
