- Located 10 mi NE of Lowell (US-T121).
- Settled 1655, incorporated as a town in 1847, and as a city in 1853. Named for the Lawrence family, of whom Abbott (1792-1855) was the first president of the Essex Company and Samuel (1759-1827) headed the Bay State Corporation. Both were prominent in founding the town (MA-T1/p26).
