- Settled in 1625, incorporated as a town in 1630, and as a city in 1822. Named for the English town on Boston in Lincolnshire from which some of the first settlers came. Called by the Indians 'Shawmut,' (a spring of water) and known to early settlers as 'Tri-mountain' (MA-T1/p10).
