- This settlement was once a Shawnee village known as Chalakagay. In the 1800s the area was found to have pure deposits marble and many quarries were soon opened. Some of the marble was used for the construction of the US Supreme Court building and the Lincoln Memorial. The word "sylcauga" is derived from the Muskogean language: "chalak" and "ge" meaning "resting place of the Chalaka Tribe" or "buzzard roost." (US-T873/p6)
