Statehood: 15 June 1836. From the name of a river named for an Indian village and tribe. The French recorded the tribal name as "Arkansa" about 1673, and the "s" was added as a plural. The French pronunciation and spelling still prevail, although the act establishing the Territory originally spelled the name "Arkansaw."
