Statehood: 9 September 1850. Hernando Cortez first applied the name in the 1500s to the south tip of Baja California and the name was extended northward to the present area of the State by explorers. The origin of the name is traced to that of an imaginary island in a Spanish romance written by Montalvo about 1510.
