- Originally organized in 1758 as Saint Philip's Parish and Christ Church Parish. Created 5 February 1777, named for William Lord Pitt, Earl of Chatham (1708-1778), Prime Minister of England who supported the rights of the American colonies with regard to British dominence. (GA-T21/p40)
