- A Mr. Chesterman laid out the town and it is thought that the end of his name was cut off and placed at the beginning. More likely, the name was borrowed from Manchester, Vermont (IA-T6). The town was first known as Burlington but this name was discarded in 1856 because of its similarity to Burlington, another city in Iowa (IA-T3/p.451). Founded in 1854 and incorporated in 1864.
