- Settled in 1829; originally named Bronson for Titus Bronson of Connecticut who built the first log cabin there. Renamed in 1836 for the Indian word Kikalamazoo, reported to mean either "mirage", "reflecting river", "place where the water boils", "stones seen in the water from which reflection looks like otters", or "the rapids at the river crossing". Incorporated as a village in 1838 and as a city in 1883.
