- Founded in June 1887 and originally named Grand Lake. Several years later the name was changed to Alliance "for the reason that it was a single word, was different from the name of any other town in the State, was short, and would be near the top of the alphabetical list of the towns in the State.". (NE-T18/p20) Incorporated in 1891. Became the county seat of Box Butte County in 1899.
