- Located in central Nebraska, 48 km (32 mi) north-northwest of North Platte; county seat: Tryon.
- Named in honor of Civil War General James B McPherson (1828-1864). McPherson County was organized under the direction of Governor John Miton Thayer in 1890 with boundaries established by an act of the legislature on 31 March 1887. (US-T131/1960/NE Placenames, p99)
