- Purchased in 1659 by a group of Puritan freeholders from Lynn, Massachusetts, from Chief Wyandance of the Montauk Tribe. The variant form of Quaquanantuck is a local Indian name meaning "the land which trembles under foot." (Quogue Through the Centries, 1955)
