- County Seat: Ipswich.
- Created in 1873, organized in 1883, and named for New Yorker Newton Edmunds, who became the second Governor of the Dakota Territory. Mr. Edmunds came to the Dakota Territory in 1861 from Niagra County, New York, to serve as chief clerk in the Surveyor's Office. Mr. Edmunds was appointed Governor by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863 and served untill 1966. (SD-T17/p25)
