- Settled in 1745 by German colonists and named for Jacob Peterson, owner of the first general store in the area. Name changed to Lunice Creek in 1833 because a post office named Petersburg was already in existence in Virginia. Name changed back to Petersburg when West Virginia achieved statehood.
