What's New
What's New on Histopolis - Q2 2010
We are actively improving and expanding the site. Here are some of the recent changes:
21 May 2010
- Adding Cemeteries. Registered users can now add cemeteries.
To add a cemetery, navigate to the Histopolis page for the county, township or incorporated city that contains the cemetery. It is generally better to go to the smallest and most specific entity and add the cemetery there. For example, if the cemetery is in Crescent Township, Pottawattamie County, Iowa, navigate to the Histopolis page for Crescent Township rather than Pottawattamie County. To add a cemetery, click on the new "Add" button that appears below the list of cemeteries. Note that you cannot add a cemetery at the state or country level, nor can you add a cemetery within an unincorporated populated place (it has no boundary).
Clicking on the add button will take you to a wizard that will guide you through a simple three step process. Cemeteries added will be reviewed by Histopolis prior to appearing on the site. Try it out. - Adding Resources (Links). The mechanism for adding resources has been revised.
There is now and "Add" button at the bottom of the resource list that takes you
to a separate page where the resource can be added. You can now add up to four links
at a time.
Several users have provided feedback recently that they were experiencing issues when attempting to add resources. This new implementation should resolve those issues as well. Thanks to those who provided feedback. Please contact the webmaster if you encounter any problems using the site. - Alternate Cemetery Names. Cemeteries are often known by several names. Histopolis
has always listed the alternate names on the page for the cemetery, but it was hard
to find a cemetery given a name different than the primary one used by Histopolis.
Histopolis now includes the alternate names in the list of cemeteries and in the cemetery drop down in the place navigation bar. Alternate names are indicated by an asterisk ("*") after the name. - Mapping Area Cemeteries. Histopolis can now show the area cemeteries for
most places (excluding states and countries). When you check the "Show Area Cemeteries"
checkbox below the map, Histopolis will all of the cemeteries within the current
place and slightly outside as well. For example, if you navigate to
Dallas County,
Texas
and click "Show Area Cemeteries", Histopolis will display the location of the 93
cemeteries that are within (blue markers) or just outside (green markers) of Dallas
County in Texas. For a place without a boundary, such as an unincorporated town, cemeteries
within about 5 miles are shown.
Hovering your mouse over any of the markers will show the cemetery name as a tooltip. Clicking the marker will display an information box including the cemetery name. Double-clicking a marker will navigate to the page for that cemetery. - Links. There are now over 170,000 links to place-specific genealogy and history resources.
- Ranking. Histopolis.com is now ranked in the top 50,000 web sites in the US based on page views. Thanks for your support!
- Place Navigation Bar. The navigation bar has had several enhancements and refinements over the last several months to increase its capability.
- Other improvements. There were several major improvements that were implemented in the March-April timeframe that were not noted in the "What's New" section. Sorry.
- Several miscellaneous improvements.
