- Located in western South Dakota, just north of Rapid City; County Seat: Sturgis.
- Created and organized in 1889; named after Fort Meade, one of the important forts for the United States military. Fort Meade was named for General George G Meade (1815-1872), who was appointed Commander of the Army of the Potomac 5 days before the Battle of Gettysburg. (SD-T17/p32)
