- The town of Smithland, sometimes called Smithtown, was settled by three Apostate Mormans; William White, Curtis Lamb, and J. Sumner. In honor of the first of these, it was originally called Whites Settlement. In 1852, Orrin B.(Old Buckskin) Smith, his brother Edwin, and John Hurley, purchased two claims from Sumner. The settlement became known as Smithland, in honor of Smith who greatly helped build the community. (IA-T2) Incorporated in 1883.
