- This village was laid out in fall of 1836 or 1837 by H. Ray and John T Thornton, who were the first general merchants. It was used as a boat landing before there was a store. It was named for George Washington's home in VA, because of their similarity in location. Both were on hills, in MO leading to the MO R. and in VA leading to the Potomac R.
