- Located in central Beaufort County, at the junction of Bath Creek and Back Creek, 24 km (15 mi) east southeast of Washington, NC.
- Settled in 1690 and incorporated in 1705. This is the oldest town in North Carolina, and served as the county seat from 1696 to 1785, when it was changed to Washington. Contains the oldest church building in North Carolina, Saint Thomas Church, built in 1734. (NC-T11/p26)
