- Located in northeastern Nebraska along the Missouri River and the boundary with Iowa, about 77 km (48 mi) north-northwest of Omaha; County Seat: Tekamah.
- Founded in 1854 and named for Francis Burt, first Governor of the Nebraska Territory. Boundaries were established on 18 February 1855 and redefined on 10 January 1863. (NE-T18/p27)
