- The town's name derives from Robert Harper's ferry, which he operated as early as 1748. Mr. Harper was granted a deed to 125 acres at the confluence of the Potomac River and Shenandoah River by Lord Fairfax in 1751, adding an additional 92 acres in 1762. The Town of Harper's Ferry was incorporated by the General Assembly of Virginia, March 24, 1851.
