- Located in eastern Nebraska with its eastern boundary along the Mississippi River, 26 km (16 mi) northwest of Omaha. County Seat: Blair.
- Named for General George Washington (1732-1799). Boundaries were approved by the Legislature on 22 February 1855, the anniversary of Washington's birth. Boundaries were redefined on 2 November 1858 and again on 12 January 1860. (NE-T18/p142)
