- At its October 12, 1971 Board on Geographic Names (BGN) Meeting the Board approved the two word spelling "Railroad Flat". On February 8, 1972 the Board acted upon the recommendation of the California Advisory Committee on Geographic Names and revised the spelling of the name to the three word form "Rail Road Flat" because of its widespread local use.
