- Joseph was named for the famous leader of a band of Nez Perce Indians during the war of 1877. Joseph was born near the mouth of the Imnaha River (Oregon) in June 1837, and died at Nespelem, Washington, on the Colville Indian Reservation, 21 Sept, 1904.
