- In 1666 James Leonard, Sr., purchased from William Haylston ten acres of land with a water privilege. He erected a forge, or bloomerie, with one hearth for the manufacture of charcoal iron, called the Whittington Forge. It was in operation in 1678 (U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Files).
