- The settlement was originally named Buffalo Marsh because the carcass of a large buffalo was found in the mud there. The name was later changed to McHenry to honor Col. James McHenry of Baltimore, who was an aide to General George Washington during the American Revolution, for whom Ft. McHenry in Baltimore was also named.
