- County Seat: Hayti.
- Created in 1873, organized in 1878, and named for Hannibal Hamlin (born 1809), Abraham Lincoln's Vice-President from 1861-1865. Mr. Hamlin also served as Senator from Maine and U S Minister to Spain. While serving as Senator in 1856, Mr. Hamlin resigned when he was elected Governor of Maine, a position he held for only a few weeks before he began a new term in the Senate. He resigned in 1861 to become Vice-President. (SD-T17/p26)
