- Located in eastern South Dakota along the boundary with Wyoming, 37 km (23 mi) northwest of Rapid City; County Seat: Deadwood.
- Created in 1875, organized in 1877, and named for Colonel John Lawrence, a member of the Territorial Legislature of 1875 from Yankton. Colonel Lawrence was given the honorary rank of Colonel when he served on the staff of Governor Falk. In 1877, Lawrence resided in teh Black Hills area and became first Treasurer of Lawrence County.
