- Located in northwest Georgia, 96 km (60 mi) west southwest of Athens; County Seat: Atlanta.
- Established 20 December 1853, likely named for Robert Fulton (1765-1815), a Pennsylvania native who owned a steamboat named the "Clermont." Others believe the County was named for Englishman Hamilton Fulton, a prominent civil engineer involved in railroading in this part of Georgia and who served as Chief Engineer of Georgia in the middle 1850s.
